Taking a breath!
Last month, Beate and I were finally able to take a step back after putting in countless hours of community outreach, research, grant writing and data collection. We welcomed YMCA-Alaska to our community partnership and they have begun working with KIBSD to bring K-5 Afterschool Care to Kodiak in the 2025-2026 school year. Nate Root, CEO, and Dave Koch, Childcare Director, will be speaking about what’s to come at tonight’s KIBSD School Board Work Session. Tune in Here! or attend in person at 6:30 PM in the District Services Conference Room, F140. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.
April 22nd Meeting Recap
Fisherman’s Hall April 22, 2025
Our agenda was shared in the last Substack. Still, we covered things like our grassroots family survey that has collected over 225 responses, a 21st CCLC update (surprise, we didn’t apply), and had our guests from YMCA-Alaska present what they can bring to our collaborative efforts and community partnerships for K-5 after-school care. We are so proud of our community for showing up and solidifying our mission with your needs for afterschool care in Kodiak. We had some wonderful families donate a rental vehicle and housing for our guests while they were on island. Thank you to the Johnson Family and the Mannelin Family. Nate and Dave had a very full itinerary for their 24 hours here.
We still have a lot of work to do…
Bringing YMCA-Alaska to Kodiak has only begun to alleviate the need for future after-school care in Kodiak. We still need to advocate and problem solve for the other 2/3 of our youth; birth-pre-K and 6th-12th grade.
We did not schedule a meeting for May due to so many family-centered events happening around the end of the school year. We’d love to continue our workgroup meetings, please email kodiakcollaborative@gmail.com if you’d like to start attending those on Sunday mornings (except this Sunday, May 11th).
